I was at the memorial service and the Spirit was pretty strong. I watched leader after leader; men and women who had spoken at memorials and funerals 100's of times in their lives, each break somewhere in there remarks with genuine emotion. I think there were like 10 different folks in a row. Clearly, Tom F. was a simple man of God who showed that you can do more with simple integrity than with flash and pragmatism. I only met him once but it had a profound effect on me. I was in a meeting with some other folks about a local pastor transition. He was the was a superintendent for the denomination and came because he was close by. He candidly stated this to me in a casual moment: "I miss being a local pastor. I miss the interaction with the people." I'm thinking, but you are the denominational leader of the Pacific NW and have access to lots of deeply spiritual situations and people. A few years later he was back pastoring in Snohomish. Pretty amazing what one person can do when the dependance and trust is on the word and work of the Spirit alone...
