About
(For the longer story, go to my story page)
I’m the pastor of this great church called Lifehouse…and most of the stuff posted on this site will have to do with thoughts from me as a pastor. But I also wear a couple of other hats:

Very important is husband. My wife Deborah is my best friend and partner in life and ministry. She absolutely rocks and puts up with a whole lot from me. I’m telling you, friends, I married way above my ‘station’, and I’m blessed because of it.

Then there is Dad…3 kids (2 growing boys and 1 cute little girl). This is us in Summer ’08 on vacation at Lake Lanier in Georgia. We really like to hang out and play together.

Student—I’m trying desperately to finish my Master’s Degree in Leadership and Spirituality. My Thesis is on the life of King David as an emerging leader (got any ideas or resources?) I’m doing this at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa and my ‘workout partner’ is my closest friend, John Fehlen who is the new pastor at West Salem Foursquare Church.

Dean of Students. That’s my day job. I love the school I serve at Life Pacific College and I love the team I work with and I love the students I work for. Couldn’t want much more than that in a job.

And at the end of the day, I’m a child of God. The rest could change (though I sure hope Husband and Dad never does) but my relationship to the Savior never will

Hey Tim,
Good job on your website/blog!I I enjoyed reading your story. It was fun to think abut the paragraphs that either Amy and or I were witness to or subject to (he he he).
I was thinking about your Thesis on David. I am sucker for thinking about anything biblical so here is my 2 cents. It may not be at all helpful but here goes.
When I consider David in connection with spirituality and leadership I think of a man who started out desperately in need of Gods instructions to actually live from day to day. Then he becomes King. At that point he is able have whatever he wants, whoever he wants, and can do anything he wants. What’s fascinating to me is that in that particular season he succumbs to sexual sin. How many pastors, business leaders, public figures who reach the proverbial top do that? What’s that about?
So I fear that this is tremendously trite and overly simplistic, but the lesson that I keep close at hand from David (among a few other key ones that i like from his life) is that regardless of my “leadership bent” or “mission” or “philosophy” or whatever the buzz of day is, because that stuff is always changing because culture is always changing, is that I have to figure out a way to keep myself completely dependent on God. It is crazy to me that the thing that was David’s destiny was also to some extent his undoing. (God redeems etc., I know that, but still is should give us pause.)
How long does your thesis have to be? I remember being stressed out having write a ten page paper double spaced at 12pts. I can’t a imagine a thesis or dissertation for that matter!!! Good thing you have a boat load of professors to help if you need, at least I hope that is the case.
Thanks Michelle,
Yup. You guys saw lots of my story. I really like your thoughts on David. I think you have it exactly right. His ‘secret’ was not that he was a good leader (Saul actually had some pretty good leadership principles down) but that he was desperate for God. When he started taking stuff into his own hands, he lost.
A good book I’m reading right now is “The Missional Leader” (click on the sidebar picture of it). It’s pretty balanced; not about the buzz of the day but about having the right focus, not copying the culturally latest on leadership.
We miss you guys.
