Five Smooth Stones for Killing Your Giant

In the story of David vs. Goliath (1 Samuel 17), David carefully picked 5 smooth stones from the creek; these were rocks he knew would hit their mark. But in the heat of battle, as David ran towards the giant, he couldn’t carefully decide which specific stone to put to sling first—he just reached into the bag and indiscriminately took out “a” rock. And that was the rock that sank into the middle of Goliath’s forehead.

Each of the five stones had been methodically chosen so that any of them would be appropriate when fighting the giant.

As I’ve been preparing for the new assignment I start today (I’m now the Supervisor of the Greater Los Angeles District for the Foursquare Church) I’ve had to carefully choose 5 stones that I know will be useful when facing the giants before me. I have to keep these with me at all times, and at any time I may have HGH to reach into my “bag” and, without thought, pull one out. All of them need to be able to hit their mark. The following have been carefully chosen:

  1. Find a word from God in the Word of God every day—and be ready to share it with anyone I come in contact with.
  2. Every encounter with a pastor or leader must leave them knowing they are valued, loved, and supported.
  3. Understand why we do what we do…I need to not grow tired of asking “why?
  4. Radical Obedience: Responding to the prompting of the Holy Spirit at a moments notice.
  5. Continually pray, both in my primary language, and in the Spirit.

Those are the five stones I’ve chosen to embrace in this role. What are your five smooth stones? Or maybe it’s 4…or maybe 6? The number isn’t important, but you need to predetermine, before you go into battle, the nature of the weapons you will be using to kill the giant you face.
